1)  Hand Tools & Equipment

 

Most hand tools and equipment can be sourced locally within building suppliers, hardware or homeware shops.  Supplies of vegetable plants and seeds, soils, horticultural materials, and specific gardening tools can be obtained from a variety of sources:

 

Garden Supply Shops Notably the HK Flower Market (Prince Edward), but also in Sai Kung, Yuen Long, Sheung Wan etc.
Horticultural Nurseries Larger ones found in Sai Kung, Yuen Long, Kam Tin, Fanling, but there are many in Hong Kong, and can be found through online directories.
Organic Farms  More than 100 organic farms in Hong Kong, mostly in the North New Territories.  A list of ‘leisure farms’ (and agricultural materials) can be found at the Federation of Vegetable Marketing Cooperative Societies Ltd website:  http://fedvmcs.org/
Urban /Rooftop Farms  Small number of commercial urban farms / roof farms (see Appendix B)

Landscape Contractors Smaller contracting firms tend to work closely with garden nurseries, Larger landscape contracting firms are typically listed on the HKSAR Development Bureau’s List of Approved Suppliers of Materials and Specialist Contractors for Public Workshttp://www.devb.gov.hk/Supplier.aspx?section=83&lang=1&id=80

3) Soil

Soil is one of the hardest materials to buy for a rooftop farm.  Small quantities can be bought from garden supply shops, horticultural nurseries and organic farms.  Larger quantities (> 10m3) can be ordered through some landscape contractors

4) Compost

Composted animal manure is available directly from EPD’s Ngau Tam Mei Processing Plant and composted food waste can be obtained from their Kowloon Bay Processing Plant.

Horse manure is available (free) from the Beas River stables.
